Camp Courageous Mission:

Provide exceptional year-round recreational and respite care opportunities for individuals with special needs and their families.

The Camp is run primarily on donations, giving all individuals to give through gifts of time, materials, money and other means that support the camp.

Vision :

To inspire a world where individuals with special needs are empowered with courage, to look beyond their current capabilities and explore their world with confidence.

Camp Courageous is a year-round special needs camp in Monticello, Iowa. We serve adults and children with intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities and other special needs through camping experiences, weekend respites, emergency respites, and educational programming. Campers have the opportunity to try a variety of creative and challenging activities. Through these activities, we encourage them to explore their abilities and the world around them. The success they experience helps to develop enhanced self-esteem that carries over to work, home and school environments.

Camp Courageous was founded in 1972 when 40 acres of land was donated to start a camp for people with disabilities. In 1973 the first 5 buildings were built by volunteers using donated supplies, and in 1974, the first 211 campers were served. Today, the camp is open year-round and lies on 300 acres of land with 25 buildings and serves over 9,000 people with special needs annually. Camp Courageous continues to operate as it was founded—on donations, without government assistance, without formal sponsorship, and without paid fundraisers. This means everything donated to camp directly benefits the campers.
